LO3 Task 4 Marketing

Advertising

The methods in which 'Star Wars Episode III' had used to advertise their product. I understand that 21st Century Fox had to undergo analogue methods of advertisement; I know this due to the fact that during 2002 the internet was not accessible to audiences. This means other methods of advertising were needed in order to promote.

One of the most popular styles of analogue advertisement used to promote 'Star Wars Episode III' was televised advertisement used to create spectacle towards the film. These were used for the advertisement of this film to attract a wide target audience. Another means of advertisement that was used to promote 'Star Wars Episode III' to a wider audience would be billboards and posters.

Billboards and posters are one of the most popular means of promoting a film towards the general public. The reason why 20th Century Fox may have used this method of advertisement is due to the fact that it is a convenient means of advertisement that everyone can see, therefore they're attracting a larger range for their target audience.

Looking back at my target audience I have come to understand that the target audience of 'Star Wars Episode III' would preferably be people who are into comic books or magazines, and 20th Century Fox also know this so they would be making advertisement through comics and magazines one of the primary sources of advertisement. This would be expensive due to the cost to print but it would also be beneficial; in terms of attracting the attention of the target audience.

In terms of the whether or not it is considered old media or new media that 20th Century Fox used to advertise 'Star Wars Episode III' I have come to understand that it would be via old media, this is because all you would be able to access about the film during 2002 would just be general information about the diegesis and the cast. There would not have been video trailers during 2002 because that is a new media means of advertisement that was introduced onto the web 2.0.

The impact that marketing has had on 'Star Wars Episode III' based on revenue shows me that is was an extremely successful film. I know this due to the figures displayed, it states that in terms of the total gross produced for the film in the US 20th Century Fox has earned $380,270,577 in the USA alone, this makes up 44.8% of the total lifetime gross accumulated  by this film. But looking at their overseas lifetime gross they had earned $468,484,191 which had made up 55.2% of the entire accumulated gross, this indicates to me that the film itself was a success based on the fact that they had created a huge amount of income considering that they used $133 million to produce the final film. This shows that the marketing side of has had a huge impact on 'Star Wars Episode III'.

20th Century Fox would've used their subsidiaries to advertise 'Star Wars Episode III'. Being the big conglomerate company that they are they would've used subsidiaries to promote their film to a wider range in terms of their audience. Looking at the subsidiaries that 21st Century Fox have, I have come to an understanding that 21st Century Fox would use subsidiaries such as Sky and Fox TV to promote their products to different audiences in different countries. Also during the production of  'Star Wars Episode III' Lucasfilms had to do a joint venture with 20th Century Fox to actually produce Star Wars a film.

An example of how the audience would've given their contribution towards the promotion of my film is by reviews, this is mainly because back in 2003 web 2.0 was not around therefore reviews would've been formed in magazines and newspapers in order to get the word out about the film.

Thank you for taking the time to listen my article on advertisement and I hope you have a better understanding on what is required in order to produce a strong advertisement campaign.

Bye Keenen Jeremiah Smith
